Marimekko Rain Coat

This is the Raincoat I created out of Marimekko fabric

Crafted using a combination of heavy weight black cotton twill,  sweater sleeves, and a multi-colored  print by Finnish textile and apparel company Marimekko, I made a raincoat.  I got the black twill from a local fabric store, Winmill Fabrics.  The sweater sleeves were sourced from from a sweater I bought from Wet Seal.  Not normally a store I shop at, I do not turn my nose up at any store where I may procure cheap materials.  In this case I was able cut off the sleeves, reshaping the sleeve cap to match the existing armhole in the coat I had already constructed.  The sleeve set in beautifully.  The printed fabric was generously donated by the Marimekko store on Newbury Street.

Front and back view of coat. Middle section “siirtolapuutarha” detail

With a number colorful prints and patterns to choose from at Marimekko, it was hard to choose the perfect textile for my coat.  The options were a plenty, but the siirtolapuutarha print really spoke to me.

This particular textile was designed by artist Maija Louekar.  On the Merimekko website, her design is aptly described as:

Dream- A flower blooms from the grey concrete. A morsel of nature in the urban jungle.
Inspire- Strolling the streets of the city, Maija Louekari marvels at the tiny gardens tucked into the nooks of urban life. Siirtolapuutarha is Finnish for allotment, which refers to the community gardens allotted to city dwellers.
Design- Vibrant colors burst from bold, black outlines. It’s a traditional flower pattern renewed into a modern wonder. A splash of life budding into a monochrome landscape.
Story-A flower steals the hardened heart of the city.”

20140110-163226.jpgI decided on a cape-like design for the coat.  I thought the bold pattern might be too over powering if I used it for the entire thing, so I used it only for the mini caplet. I lined the caplet using an accent color from the print: a vibrant teal. for kicks I also made a kind of make-shift label from the selvage of the fabric. creative and industrious if I do say so myself.  Cute and official looking right?

In an effort to keep with coat simple, I decided not to fuss with a lining.  To do this I sewed the body of the jacket together with the seams to the outside, then covering the raw edges in 1″ bias strips of the Marimekko fabric, then top stitched it down for  a nice finish. So I killed two birds with one stone: creating a clean finished garment without a lining and adding some coordinated design details to tie the whole look together.  The inside facings are also finished in narrower bias strips in the same lively print covering all raw edges.  The hemline is also finished in the fun print with a bias binding.

20140110-163747.jpgFor the finishing touch, I made 5 covered buttons out of the same fabric and attached them to the jacket to pull the whole thing together!

…. And made in less than 24 hours

Charles st. Summer shopping

Summer Shopping in Beacon Hill

Well, summer is only a few days old, but it has made quite a debut this year! The steamy hot weather is a sure sign that she is here and here to stay! With temperatures sky rocketing into the 90’s, we all hurry to bring our cashmeres and wools to fur storage to make room for our summer wardrobe. As we all happily ditch our bulky layers and strip down to our bare minimums, we begin to reinvent our look for this summer.

Even with all of those options, I understand the desire, the want, the NEED to buy new things! ….and what the hell, why not, if the shoe fits buy it!

I am of course, a huge fan of using, reusing, and repurposing pieces from years past. I love to mix & match and cross reference seasons….and I am not shy to raid the closets of the men in my life. Nothing like well tailored men’s shirt on a woman right?

Summer is a great time to dress up, dress down and suit up for special occasions. As you may recall, I have recently taken up sailing. I did this for a couple of reasons:

1. Boats are really great places to get a tan

2. It tends to be a bit cooler on the water

3. Sailing is an old WASPY pastime.

4. Nautical clothing is so much fun!

Here’s a look at what local stores are selling to get in the Nautical mood for summer!

Grab your life vest, boat shoes, and bottle of wine! Throw a few snacks in to one of Sea Bag’s True North Tote bag and sail your way in to the summer sun!

And for the Little Kiddy Hellions check out the nice nautical numbers they have at North Rive Outfitters Kids!

NRO Kids Pirate style

One of my favorite stores on the Hill, Holiday carries some really great repurposed vintage pieces, funky jewelry, and made to measure in House designs. They are showing some really great nautical pieces right now too! Everything from basic kaftans an dresses, to sail boat necklaces and bracelets.

….And for the perfect shoes and accessories to complete any sassy summer outfit drift on in to Moxi.

For the hipster in your Hellion….

Yes! We’ve got something for you too! Its not ALL about prepsters and bow ties around these parts. Beacon Hill’s Charles st. hosts a number of young funky boutiques specializing in hip street wear. Uncle Pete’s is definitely one of my favorites! Although I am bummed he no longer carries women’s clothes, I am excited to report on the totally awesome menswear he carries. Always the quickest guy in town to pick up on new hot up and coming designers, Uncle Pete has got his finger on the heart beat of the fashion world. In addition to the cool new stock flowing in and out of the Charles st. Boutique, He carries a bevy of original pieces by local designers and iconic “Uncle Pete’s” T-shirts.

Here a a few summery nautical pieces I picked out.

If you’re more the cocktail party type, consider popping in to The Flat of the Hill for little ditty presents. Summer themed napkins are a great gift to present your host or hostess. If those don’t suit your fancy maybe these little preppy sailing inspired bracelets will do the trick…. And just incase you needed reminding, The Flat of the Hill lets us know what’s really up with these printed wood signs….

Mini photo story:

Full blown prep? J McLaughlin has got the summer duds for you…

For nautical nick-nacks…. BLACK INK

….I’m not even really sure I know what these are…. But I decided to include them anyways given their anchor nature. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Children’s store Red Wagon will have your baby hellion properly dressed for any occasion on the water. Mini ensembles are perfectly presented in this window display. Through fun nautical/ Americana storytelling, this shop assures me that they can outfit any kid perfectly for the beach, pool, or country club this summer.

Even the local Antique stores are getting in on the Nautical vibe!

Shady lady

While making my rounds cruising up and down Newbury and Boylston I popped in to Nordstrom rack… A relatively new department store for the area.

My mom gave me a gift card for my birthday a couple of months ago that I still hadn’t used. I have been in a couple of times but have never found anything too inspiring…. I did get a cute Michael Kors touk one time… But flustered by a phone call and tangled in my purse and scarf I ended up paying cash for the damn thing!

Ever since that day this gift card has been burning a whole in my wallet (which by the way is a white gucci men’s card case…tres chic). When I walked in today I decided that today was the day I would SPEND IT!

I was wishing and hoping for something amazing…. And right there…. There they were!

Proving “what you think about you bring about” I found the perfect accessory to complete my outfit (pictures later)

Not only are they totally awesome, but they fold down to pocket size convenience to fit in your clutch, teensy wincey skinny jeans pockets, or breast pocket. I myself recommend keeping them on your face where they belong…. But if you have to take them off throw them on top of your head. They don’t have the wirey nose piece that gets all tangled in your hair.

There were a couple of pairs left over there…. Some in a wood like grain like mine, one or two in tortoise shell like and one in black. They also come with an awesome case and snazzy lens cloth to keep your new shades clean so you can spot more awesome stuff in stores and take in all the beautiful sights and sounds of our awesome city!
